Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky, to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln. Thomas was a carpenter and since his father's entire fortune was left to his older brother after his death, he set up his own farm with hard-earned money.

However, the cadastral system of the State of Kentucky at that time was quite primitive and problems were often encountered due to the inability to determine property boundaries precisely. When the titles of the two lands he owned were canceled by the state, he and his family moved to Indiana in 1816 because the government could guarantee the titles granted. Referring to this move in later years, Abraham Lincoln says that his father moved "partly because he was against slavery, but mainly because of title problems."

The Lincolns crossed the Ohio River and settled at Little Pigeon Creek. At that time their family consisted of Thomas, Nancy, young Abraham, and older sister Sarah. Expressing his thoughts on these days in 1859, Lincoln said, “We settled in our new home when the state had just joined the Union. "In Indiana, which is a very wild region, the forests are still full of wild bears and other animals..."

Abraham started cutting trees so that the land could be farmed. Despite being quite young, he had a burly physique and worked hard until he was 23 years old. Exceptions to this were the sloughing and harvesting seasons. Lincoln's body was so athletic and strong that the doctors who performed autopsies after his death years later could not help but draw attention to it.

After Abraham's mother died of "milk disease" in 1818, his father, Thomas, married Sarah Bush Johnston. But tragedies haunted the Lincoln family. Her older sister Sarah died in childbirth in 1828. These two deaths had profound effects on Abraham that would leave a mark throughout his life. As observed and reported by those who knew him, Lincoln had a melancholic, often depressed, and death-prone mood.

Lincoln had hardly received any teaching during his youth. “In those days, there was not much to motivate people to study,” he used to describe this situation. It is hard to believe that Lincoln, who was completely self-taught, had no instruction. Especially when one considers his command of English, his excellent ability to speak before the masses, and his successful political and legal career, one is truly amazed. In those years, Lincoln spent most of his time at the plow or in the forest cutting trees, where he was assigned by his father. A very hardworking person, Abraham's father sometimes hired his neighbors as a farmhand, and did not give him a single cent for the income he earned from it. It can be said that the indignation caused by this situation, in which a person's labor is usurped by another, is the underlying element of his anti-slavery thoughts.
