An airplane is a vehicle that can fly in the air. Planes, helicopters, gliders, airships, and balloons are all different forms of aircraft.
Balloons and airships were the first planes and could rise because they contained a lighter-than-air gas. Sir George Cayley of England and Otto Lilienthal of France were the first people to fly in gliders in the 19th century. However, in the 1880s, the transition to powered flight after the introduction of gasoline engines was possible.
