In fact, airplanes can stay in the air not thanks to their huge engines, but thanks to the very simple physics principles and the structure of their wings. While it may sound counterintuitive, an aircraft can also stay in the air without an engine when properly designed. The biggest example of this is glider and paragliding. They both gain a certain speed by gliding without any engine power and stay in the air with the effect of this speed on the wings.
The most basic principle that keeps aircraft in the air is the “Bernoulli Principle” that we learned in high school. According to Bernoulli's principle, as the velocity of the fluid flowing over a surface increases, the pressure acting on the surface decreases. For example, when we hold a piece of paper with both hands and blow it from its upper surface, an air flow occurs on the upper surface. This air flow reduces the pressure acting on the paper as per the Bernoulli principle. However, the air pressure acting on the bottom surface of the paper does not change. Air pressure acting from below creates an upward buoyant force. Thus, the entire paper can lie horizontally on the floor.
