A herbaceous plant (Hordeum vulgare). The grains of this plant, which are used in making bread and beer and given to animals as fodder, are called Barley. Barley is the oldest cultivated plant in the world, along with wheat from the Poaceae family.

In prehistoric times, people used barley, which was the first cultivated plant, as food. Even today, barley is cultivated and used as food in the arctic regions and high mountain regions, where wheat cannot be cultivated. In addition, bare-grain barley is grown together with paddy in some parts of the Tibetan plateau, Korea, China, and Japan, making it the food source of the people there. As bread is made from barley flour, it is also made from semolina, pastries, soup and in some countries (ersatz) coffee.
