Flag of Canada
In the middle of the red
background is a white square, and inside this square is a stylized red maple leaf with 11 ends. Prior to this flag, Canada had used several variations of the British Red Banner. Canada held several competitions to create its own flag from the 1940s to 1965, but the Red Banner continued to fly over Canada. In 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson formed a committee for the new flag. Out of three options, George F.G. Stanley's maple leaf design took first place. The current flag was adopted in 1964. The flag appeared for the first time on February 15, 1965, and every year February 15 began to be celebrated as National Flag Day.
