Cappuccino first appeared in Vienna coffee shops as 'Kapuziner' in the 1700s. Kapuziner was described as 'coffee with cream and sugar' and spice was added in the 1850s. The drinks were called 'Kapuzin' because they resembled the clothes worn by monks. Real cappuccino was invented in Italy. The first record of cappuccino was in the 1930s. This coffee, prepared with an espresso machine, first started to become popular in cafes and restaurants. Since espresso machines were complex in these times, they were limited to private cafes. At that time, cappuccino was served with whipped cream, chocolate chips or cinnamon. Thanks to its marketing in the 1980s, it also spread to America. Having stagnated during World War II, cappuccino managed to spread to many countries after the war.
In recent years, cappuccino customs have changed in some European countries. Some Europeans started drinking cappuccino all day long, not just in the morning.
