It was developed by Parisian physicist Christiaan Huygens and his assistant Denis Papin in 1673. Belgian engineer Etienne Lenoir, on the other hand, patented the internal combustion engine with two strokes under the name "Gas and expanded air engine" in 1859 and developed the first internal combustion engine that was ignited by electricity and cooled by water in 1860.
Now that we have left behind this short history of the internal combustion engine, let's look at its working principle. Internal combustion engines; They are the engines that take the air and fuel mixture into the fuel chamber and compress it and ignite it and as a result obtain energy. Of course, while doing this process, numerous steps come into play, but we can summarize it as above in its simplest form. Today, there are two types of internal combustion engines according to their design types. These; piston engine and rotary engine.
Wenkel Engine (Rotary engine)
This type of engine, which has not been used in recent years due to the need for frequent maintenance and high fuel consumption, undergoes a very different combustion process than piston engines. The only internal combustion engine type invented in the 20th century, the Wenkel engine outperformed piston engines in terms of power/displacement for many years. Considering that the last representative of these engines was produced in the early 2000s, we see that piston engines struggled for many years to surpass it.
When we look at the working principle of the Wankel engine, we see that the triangular rotor placed in the middle takes the fuel and air, compresses it, burns it and throws it out of the exhaust. This engine with 4 strokes like reciprocating engines; It performs the intake, compression, combustion and exhaust timings respectively.
Piston Engine
Piston engines are the type of engine we see most often today. Pistons are placed at various points according to the number of cylinders of the engine. Since it is the type of engine that is accepted today, we will see this engine in more detail in the rest of the article, but in general, it works as a 4-stroke. At these times, it takes the fuel and air, compresses it and burns it and provides output from the exhaust. Engines using gasoline or LPG as fuel have spark plugs to ignite, while diesel engines have injectors to spray the diesel over the heated air.
Engines by fuel use
Engines need a fuel to produce energy. There are some changes in the engines according to their fuels. When we look at the engines according to the fuel usage, which affects the working principle of the engine, we come across 2 1 different engine types. The first of these is diesel, that is, diesel-powered engines. Apart from that, the gasoline-powered engine type is the most common. In addition, gasoline engines can work with the LPG system.
