This philosophy has liberated India and inspired civil rights and freedom advocates around the world. Gandhi is known in India and around the world by the names given by Tagore as mahatma meaning supreme spirit and bapu meaning father. He has been officially declared the "Father of the Nation" in India, and his birthday, October 2, is celebrated as a national holiday under the name Gandhi Jayanti. On June 15, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared October 2 as the "World Day of Nonviolence".
