A gas can be compressed. Gases do not have to conform to the shape of the container they are in. They can also expand the container they are in.

In a gas, the molecules have sufficient kinetic energy. Therefore, the intermolecular force is very small and the intermolecular distance is much greater than their molecular size. A gas has no definition of shape and volume. But they cover the container they are in. A liquid may be converted to a gas by heating at constant pressure and boiling point or by depressurizing at constant temperature.

A gas can be liquefied by compressing it alone without cooling at temperatures below the critical temperature. It is also called vapor. A vapor can be in equilibrium with a liquid where the gas pressure of the solid is equal to the vapor pressure.
