The CONCACAF Gold Cup is a tournament organized by the national football teams of the CONCACAF countries. Participating countries are those located in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Apart from these, a maximum of three countries from other continental football associations can be invited to the final matches. The Cup is held each time in the USA, twice with Mexico. The first CONCACAF Championship was held in 1963, replacing the CCCF Championship (1941-1961), a tournament only attended by Central American and Caribbean countries. This championship lasted until 1971 and no tournament was held between 1973 and 1989. The CONCACAF champions during this period were considered successful in the FIFA World Cup qualifications and would participate in the FIFA World Cup as the CONCACAF winner. In 1991, the championship returned as the Gold Cup and separate qualifying matches were played for the FIFA World Cup. Since then, the trophy has been lifted eight times by Mexico, six times by the United States, and once by Canada.
