According to the World Health Organization, health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, but a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Various definitions have been used for different purposes over time. Health can be improved by promoting healthy activities such as regular physical exercise and adequate sleep, and by reducing or avoiding unhealthy activities such as smoking or excessive stress.

While some factors affecting health arise from individual choices, some factors go beyond both individual and group preferences.
