Chinese ink was found around 2500 BC, while the use of ink by the Egyptians indicates that they found it around the same time. Inscriptions written on stones from Assyrian, Egyptian and Greek civilizations and earthen slabs are different remains. Papyrus inscribed with ink from the underground tombs of the Egyptians is also among the remains found.

It is thought that they used Calamus and a quill in the manuscripts found. The Romans and Greeks didn't just use tablets and scratch pens to convey their thoughts. They also used ink. Already, the formulas of the ink are found in the inscriptions of Plinius, Marcus Vitrunius Polio and Dicskorides.

Inks with sepi ali and iron gods were known in antiquity. These inks are thought to have been used by artists who copied manuscripts. On some scrolls, the initials are seen to be written in purple (basic material ginger, mercury sulfide and bloodstone) ink.
