The genus consists mainly of species from the northern hemisphere. It is economically important both as a source of grapes for direct consumption of the fruit and for fermentation in winemaking.

Most 'Vitis' cultivars are wind-pollinated cultivars with hermaphrodite flowers containing both male and female reproductive structures. These flowers are grouped into bunches called inflorescences. In many species, such as "Vitis vinifera", each successfully pollinated inflorescence turns into a grape fruit, with a cluster of grapes. Although the flowers of the vine are usually very small, the grains are usually large and brightly colored with sweet flavors that attract birds and other animals to disperse the seeds inside the fruit.

The vines usually bear fruit only on shoots from buds that developed during the previous growing season.
