Leonardo DiCaprio was born on November 11, 1974 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA. Her father, George DiCaprio, was the distributor of humorous books, and her mother, Irmelin Indenbirken, was the daughter of a family that had settled in America from Oer-Erkenschwick, Germany, and was a secretary during her childhood. During her pregnancy with Leonardo, Indenbirken, who was at the famous painter Leonardo da Vinci's exhibition in Italy and felt her son's first kick there, was inspired enough about the name. When Caprio was just one year old, his parents divorced and custody was given to his mother. Interested in baseball cards and humor books as a child, Caprio often visited museums with his father and traveled to Germany, where his grandfather and grandmother lived. To support Caprio, who grew up in economically weak conditions, his mother worked in several different jobs. Using the phrase Hollywood ghettos to describe where he grew up, Caprio was influenced by his acting half-brother, Adam Starr, from his father's new marriage.
