LGBT, or GLBT, emerged in the 1990s after the abbreviation LGB, and from the mid-to-late 1980s the word gay began to represent the LGBT community. Many activists have switched to using the LGBT community, seeing the use of the gay community as an incomplete definition.

It is also sometimes used as LGBTT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or transgender) or LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex), LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transgender, Intersex, Queer). "LGBT", which has been used since 1900, is the umbrella word used in the struggle for gay rights. The LGBT movement, which is called the gay movement, has ceased to be a roof word because the word gay does not include transvestite, transgender and bisexual. The movement started to use the word GLBTT, but due to the fact that lesbians are "disappeared" in the society, the letter L was replaced and a kind of positive discrimination was made against women. Some organizations abroad added the letters I to represent intersexual or Q to represent queer to this umbrella word.
