Inside the glass protector on the bulb is a metal wire called a filament; this metal is held in place by two support rods. The electric current passing through the filament heats this metal wire, and as a result of this heat, the bulb scatters light around it.
The filament must withstand very high temperatures, or it may melt or break. The filaments in the bulbs we use today have a melting point of, 3410 °C.
