Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati and the brother of the war god Karthikeya (or Subrahmanya). In the story, it occurred when his mother gave the soil the shape of a child.

When Shiva went on meditative wanderings, Parvati asked his new son, Ganesha, to stand by while he bathed. He was surprised when Shiva returned home and found Ganesha. Although Ganesha says he is Parvati's son, Shiva, enraged by what happened, summoned the demon gang bhutagana to fight Ganesha relentlessly.

However, the youth easily defended himself against these formidable foes, and Vishnu was forced to intervene by disguising himself as Maya. When the boy was distracted by Vishu's beauty, the demons or Shiva cut off the boy's head. Parvati ran from her bathroom and quarreled with Shiva for killing her sons.

Repentant, Shiva ordered that a new head be found for the boy and asked for the head of the first animal nearby. Ganesha's new head was an elephant head, as the first closest animal was an elephant. Ganesha thus became one of the most remarkable Hindu deities. Rewarding his courage to fight demons, Shiva made Ganesha the leader of the bhutagana.
