Shiva is the name of one of the gods in the triangle of great gods called Trimurti in Shiva Indian Mythology, Brahma is the 'creator' and Vishnu is the 'protector' while Shiva is responsible for 'destruction and regeneration. The belief in Vishnu dates back to the Aryans of the Indus valley in northern India, and is thought to have been transformed into Rudra in the epic period, Shiva, who was the personified form of nature's destructive power such as storm, lightning, and fire in the Vedic period. While Shaivites believe that Shiva is the ultimate truth, in the Smarta sect it is accepted as one of the 5 initial forms of god.

Its symbol is the phallic object known as the lingam, the god riding an ox named Nandi, a wise yogi living a reclusive life on the summit of Mount Kailasha. Shiva is the wife of Parvati and has two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, and a daughter, Ashoka Sundaria, from the goddess.
