Mercury moves in its orbit at 173,000 kilometers per hour. This is 1.6 times faster than Earth's orbital speed. This causes Mercury to move rapidly across the sky when viewed from Earth - probably why this celestial body is called a "leaping planet" in the MUL.APIN tablets. Moreover, the modern name of Mercury is therefore derived from the Roman God Mercury (the Greek equivalent of this is the God Hermes). The Romans believed that the god Mercury was the most cunning and quickest god. This god is also known as the god of money, travel and theft.
