Phil Knight, the founder of Nike, first made an agreement with Japan's Onitsuka Tiger brand to compete with Adidas and Puma, which influenced the USA in the sports shoes industry. Then it started to import to the USA under the name of Blue Ribbon Sports.

While Adidas sold its sneakers for $9, Phil Knight managed to sell Onitsuka Tiger shoes, which the USA did not know yet, for $7. These shoes first attracted the attention of the athletes, and then an agreement was reached with the sports manufacturers.

When things were going pretty well, something unexpected happened and Tiger abruptly terminated the deal. Thereupon, Phil Knight decided to create his brand, which would become Nike in the future.

Phil Knight suggested the name of the brand to his first employee, Jeff Johnson, to be Dimension 6, after which Jeff Johnson suggested the name Nike. The name Nike was thought to go too well with the logo, and Phil Knight agreed that the name Nike was better than his own suggestion.
