The modern peace symbol was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958 for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The vertical line in the center of the peace symbol symbolizes the letter "D" in the semaphore, which is the system that provides communication between ships, and the diagonal lines represent the letter "N". The letters "N" and "D" represent the English words "nuclear" and "disarmament".
