Penguins are flightless, upright, webbed seabirds in the Sphenisciformes family, Spheniscidae family. They inhabit the coasts of the South Pole, New Zealand, Australia, South America, South Africa and the Galapagos Islands; however, penguins are not found in the Northern hemisphere, including the North Pole. About 18 species are known, varying in size from 30–105 cm. Although almost all penguin species are native to the Southern Hemisphere, they are not only found in cold climates such as Antarctica. In fact, only a few penguin species live in that far South. It is stated that 5 of 18 species live in Antarctica, 4 in sub-Antarctic islands, and only 4 of these species live in cold climates and 14 in temperate and warm climates. There are several species in the temperate zone, but one species, Galapagos penguin Equatorial lives nearby. The Emperor penguin, the largest of the penguins, reaches 45 kg in weight. They get smaller as they move towards warmer regions. They feed on crustaceans, fish and cuttlefish in the seas. Its feathers are not at all like bird feathers. Their backs are black or gray, their abdomens are covered with white fine and scaly hairs. The species are distinguished from each other by the colorful feathers on their heads. Since their tails are short and their feet are behind their bodies, they can easily stand upright. In the sea, they can swim at 10 knots per hour. They can even double their speed when necessary.
