Pink Floyd was formed by university students named Syd Barrett on guitar and vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters on bass and vocals, and Richard Wright on keyboards and vocals. They gained popularity by performing in London's underground music scene in the late 1960s, and under Barrett's leadership they released two chart-topping singles and a successful debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967). Guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour joined the band in December 1967. After suffering from mental illness, Barrett left the band in April 1968 as his condition worsened. Waters became the band's first songwriter and creative leader, and has released concept albums such as The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979), and The Final Cut (1983). . The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall became the best-selling albums of all time. The Dark Side of the Moon, which has become the icon of the group, remained on the Billboard 200 chart for 741 weeks as the longest-running album of all time.
