The tradition began in honor of President Washington. The birthday of the country's first leader is February 22.
It was declared a national holiday in 1968 when the U.S. Congress passed the law known as the Immutable Monday Holiday Act.
Presidents Day is also celebrated in memory of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, who was born on February 12.
Although often referred to as Presidents Day, the federal government still recognizes this day as "Washington's Birthday".
