The seed is an embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering. Seed formation is part of the reproductive process in spermatophytes seed plants, including gymnosperm and angiosperm plants. Seeds are the product of the mature egg, fertilization by pollen, and some growth within the parent plant. The embryo is developed from the seed coat obtained from the zygote and the integration of the ovule. There has been a significant improvement in the reproduction and success of seeds, gymnosperm and angiosperm plants, compared to more primitive plants such as ferns, mosses and liverworts, which use water-dependent methods to reproduce themselves and do not have seeds. Seed plants now dominate biological niches on land, from forests to grasslands in both warm and cold climates.
