Skyscrapers are not only a key solution to urban population growth, they are also seen as symbols of pride for countries. The buildings we call skyscrapers appeared very recently, in the late 19th century. Builders have an age-old enemy: Gravity.
By the end of the 19th century, however, modern engineering techniques and materials had finally triumphed over gravity.
For most of history, the tallest man-made structure in the world was the 147-metre Great Pyramid of Giza. Today, however, this height barely meets the definition of "skyscraper". Since all buildings were built of brick and mortar back then, they were all based on the same principle: the higher the building, the wider the floor had to be.
However, with the Industrial Revolution, we were able to build stronger and longer iron and steel beams. This is what changed everything. It was now possible to build taller buildings at ground level without taking up too much space. Thus began an international race that gave birth to today's tallest and most talked about buildings.
