The snake is associated with water and earth in most mythologies, as well as with the heavens and the underworld. The snake, which is considered as one of the signs and appearances of the moon (similarity between getting out of the shadow of the moon and peeling off the skin of the snake) represents fertility and fertility, immortality and rebirth, knowledge/wisdom as a lunar power in many cultures, probably because it renews itself by changing its skin at certain periods and lives close to water sources. (see also WATER). Especially in Southeast Asian (Indian and Chinese) and Oceanian cultures, the serpent is believed to control both fertility and fertility, destruction and death, thanks to its influence on rain, and snake worship ceremonies are performed. In ancient Mesopotamia, there is a snake motif in the rites and depictions of the goddesses who provide universal fertility. Since these goddesses were also considered funeral hymns, snakes became a death animal and tribal ancestor that entered the souls of the dead (Eliade, p. 169). In parallel with the symbolism of renewal, the snake took part in the rites of participation in the community, especially in the gnostic cults. Again, in various cultures (Mesopotamia, ancient Iran and ancient Greece) and similar to the story of the Garden of Eden in the Torah (Genesis, chapters 2-3), legends were told that the snake stole the immortality bestowed on man by the gods. However, it has been suggested that all these legends stem from a primitive myth that a snake or a sea monster guards the holy water or the source of immortality (life/golden apple tree, fountain of youth, immortality water/plant, earth treasures, etc.).
