The word fedora comes from the title of an 1882 play by Victorien Sardou. Princess Fédora in the play wears a hat very similar to the fedora in the play. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the fedora hat was especially popular in cities, as it protected the wearer's head from wind and weather conditions and could be folded when not in use.
With the popularization of the fedora, many different styles of fedora have emerged. Especially in America, fedora hats were considered indispensable for suits and formal wear, at that time most men did not go out without a hat.
The fedora fell out of favor and lost popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s. However, it has recently become popular again among nostalgia-loving hipsters, especially in America.
