Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco. His biological father, Abdulfettah John Sandali, and his biological mother, Joanne Schieble, adopted Steven to Paul and Clara Jobs. Attending Cupertino High School in California, Steve attended classes outside of school hours at the Hewlett-Packard headquarters in Palo Alto. Soon after, he was accepted for a summer internship at the same place and worked with Steve Wozniak. Wozniak was 21 when they met, and Jobs was 16.

Finishing high school, Jobs was accepted to Reed College in Portland, but dropped out after just one semester. Continuing to attend some lectures outside for a while, Jobs made a living by sleeping on the floor in his friends' dorm rooms, collecting empty Coke bottles for food and taking them for recycling, and eating free meals a week at the local Hare Krishna temple. Steve would later say about 'Calligraphy', which was among the courses he took at Reed in those days: "If I hadn't taken that class illegally, today's different font design on the Mac wouldn't exist".

Returning to California in 1974, Jobs began attending Homebrew Computer Club meetings with Wozniak. He worked for a while as a technician at Atari, a game and hardware manufacturer, in order to save money for a trip to India that he had in mind at the time. He accompanied Daneil Kottke Jobs, who would later become the first Apple employee, on his trip to India for spiritual enlightenment. Returning to his country dressed in traditional Indian clothes, with a shaven head and a Buddhist, Jobs also used psychedelic stimulants, which Jobs would describe as "one of the few most important things I've ever done in my life".
