The Ukrainian flag consists of two equal horizontal stripes, blue at the top and yellow at the bottom. The blue color at the top represents the sky, and the yellow color at the bottom represents the fertile lands of Ukraine and the wheat grown in these lands.

The blue and yellow striped flag, in which the Ukrainian national colors are based on the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhinya, a powerful state that existed in Eastern Europe between 1199 and 1349, began to be used as the national Ukrainian flag in 1848.

The blue and yellow flag, which was banned because it symbolized nationalist thought when Ukraine was a member of the Soviet Union, was re-adopted on August 24, 1991, when Ukraine gained its independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
