The White House is the official residence of the presidents of the United States, located in Washington.

It is the most important of many official buildings in Washington, the federal capital of the United States. George Washington, the first President of the United States, determined the location of the capital and drew up plans. However, he died in 1799 without ever being able to sit in the newly established capital. A year after his death, the presidential building was inaugurated. The building has been completely painted white.

All US presidents since John Adams have sat here. It is located on a land of about six hectares in a large park. It is a 2.5-storey building 52.5 meters long and 25.5 meters wide. The center and original portion of the building was constructed from Virginia sandstone and retains its 18th-century Georgian style despite many changes. The first bathroom was added to the White House in 1877.

In 1814, all public buildings in Washington were burned by British forces. The White House was also among the buildings burned. Under the supervision of James Hoban, the White House was rebuilt and ready for use in 1817. It was refurbished in empire style by President James Monroe, with furniture and furnishings imported from France. The burned exterior walls of the building were painted white. Because of this, a misconception spread that the building was called the White House. In fact, the building has been called by this name since it was first built.

In 1949, during the Harry Truman era, the residence was deemed unsafe, and a plan was drawn up for its reconstruction. All the interior walls of the building were demolished, leaving the exterior walls, and it was rebuilt on a steel and concrete frame. Great attention was paid to the preservation of parts such as the original wood, marble and decorative plaster work. The original floor plan has been preserved, while modern plumbing and new amenities have been added.
